The Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government on Saturday adopted ECO as the name of the single currency to be issued in January 2020.
The leaders at their 55th Ordinary Session in Abuja endorsed the name while congratulating the Ministerial Committee on the Single Currency for the considerable progress recorded in the implementation of the revised roadmap.
Nigeria's Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Authority instructed the ECOWAS Commission to work in collaboration with West African Monetary Agency.
The leaders also instructed the commission to work with West African Monetary Institute and the central banks to accelerate the implementation of the revised roadmap with regard to the symbol of the single currency.
The Authority also directed the commission and the central banks to accelerate the operation of the Special Fund for financing of programmes in the revised Roadmap for the ECOWAS Single Currency Programme.
"It further directs the commission to ensure implementation of the recommendations of the
meeting of the ministerial committee held in Abidjan on June 17 and June 18 as well as preparation and implementation of the Communication Strategy for the single currency programme.
"The Authority takes note of the 2018 macroeconomic convergence report. It noted the worsening of the macroeconomic convergence and urges member states to do more to improve on their performance in view of the imminent deadline."
Furthermore, the ECOWAS Chairman President Issoufou Mahamadou said the revised roadmap still stipulated that the single currency would be issued in Jan. 2020.
"We have not changed that but we will continue with assessment between now and then.
"We are of the view that countries that are ready will launch the single currency and countries that are not yet ready will join the programme as they comply with all six convergence criteria."
He also said that there was "a real firm political will" for the region to hastily achieve the single currency. (NAN)http://heelsworldinfo.blogspot.com

A statement by the organisers of the programme quoted the wife of the Vice-President as saying the event reminded her of the time she spent with some area boys and prostitutes in Lagos.
Mrs Osinbajo said, "I wanted to watch the drama to relive the memory of the times that I spent working in the slums of Lagos among area boys, prostitutes, people who had been rejected and those who seemed lost already. As the drama went on, I could identify some people that I knew so many years ago."http:/heelsworldinfo.blogspot.com
The Federal High Court in Lagos on Tuesday ordered the release of former Ekiti State governor Ayodele Fayose's passport to enable him to embark on a foreign medical trip, after he was re-arraigned before Justice C.J. Aneke by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
Justice Aneke made the order following an application by Fayose's lawyer, Mr Ola Olanipekun (SAN).
The ex-governor is being prosecuted for an alleged fraud of N2.2bn.
"I hereby grant the defendant's application for a temporary release of his passport to enable him to undertake a medical trip abroad." Said by Justice Aneke.
"The defendant shall return the passport to the court on or before the 16th of September, 2019," the judge held.
Fayose had deposited his passport with the court as part of the conditions attached to his bail.
Fayose, whose trial started in October last year, was arraigned afresh following the withdrawal of the case from Justice Mojisola Olatoregun before whom Fayose and a firm, Spotless Limited, were first arraigned on October 22, 2018.
The Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice Adamu Abdu-Kafarati, transferred the case from Justice Olatoregun following an allegation of bias against her by the acting Chairman of the EFCC, Mr Ibrahim Magu.
Magu based his application for a change of judge on the altercation between Justice Olatoregun and the prosecuting counsel for the anti-corruption body, Mr Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), during the March 20, 2019 proceedings.
At the said proceedings, the judge had lambasted Jacobs for "reviewing my ruling", saying the SAN was engaging in "Jankara (shady) practice."
But Jacobs, who repeatedly denied reviewing the judge's ruling, said he was not a "Jankara" lawyer, adding in all his years of practice, from the high court to the Supreme Court, he had never been so labelled.http://heelsworldinfo.blogspot.com

Chelsea have confirmed the return of Frank Lampard as the club's new manager, with the former Blues midfielder signing an three-year deal to replace Maurizio Sarri.
Despite a third-place finish in the Premier League last season and Europa Leagueglory, Sarri struggled to win over fans and jumped at the chance to succeed Massimiliano Allegri at Juventus.
Lampard quickly emerged as the stand-out candidate to take over at Stamford Bridge, having made a promising start to his managerial career with Championship outfit Derby County.
He moulded a young, attack-minded side - which featured two Chelsea loanees in Fikayo Tomori and Mason Mount - and narrowly missed out on promotion after losing to Aston Villa in the play-off final.
Derby had wanted to keep Lampard, and even opened talks over a new contract, but he was convinced to return to Chelsea and the Blues have paid around £4million in compensation.
The 40-year-old faces a testing first season in charge as Chelsea face up to the prospect of a two-window transfer ban, though they have appealed the decision.
If the appeal is unsuccessful, Lampard will not be able to make any new signings until next summer and will need to utilise the academy to a far great extent than previous managers.
Lampard enjoyed 13 hugely successful seasons at Chelsea as a player and remains the club's record goalscorer, winning three Premier League titles and the Champions League.
He is unlikely to be the only familiar face returning to west London, with Didier Drogba and Ashley Cole both linked with roles in Lampard's backroom team, while former Chelsea academy boss - and Derby assistant - Jody Morris also moves to Stamford Bridge.http://heelsworldinfo.blogspot.com
